Emily- Zodiac Title Research

Zodiac

Zodiacs title sequence does not have the actual title sequence showing. However, from the start of the sequence, we are shown a piece of text coloured white on a black background in Courier New. This title informs spectators that what occurs in Zodiac is based on actual case files.

This simple yet effective informative title we are shown creates anticipation due to not knowing what the case files are. This leads to speculation and enigma generated through the text we read. When we recognise it represent real case files, this also creates interest from spectators as many people may be able to empathise experiencing similar case files.

Film Title Design

The first title we see is very simple and plain, however, this makes us engage with the words and gives us more time as spectators to process the meaning and even a hidden message if there is one. In the first title, there is really much restrictiveness as we are told that this film is based on 'actual case studies'. The animation of the first title is quick and abrupt. The white text on a black background helps bring out the letters and these two colours contrast well, giving a clearer image of the title.

Extra Information

When the footage starts rolling, a few seconds in, the area, state and date are revealed. This is shown by a caption integrated within the footage. The location caption, immediately links and is parallel to what spectators see. We are shown a P.O.V shot of driving down a street, on the 4th of July. This date is celebrated widely in the USA. It is called 'Independence day'. We hear diegetic, on-screen sound effects of fireworks. This elevates tension and anxiety, as fireworks are dangerous, and used in the wrong way people have been killed or badly injured.

Titles & Moving image

This film begins with an equilibrium, known in Todorov's theory, the order of film. The title sequence is in chronological and linear order. The way in which we are informed that it is based on real case files and we are told the location, allows spectators to become more engaged and consumed. After the titles, we find out that the two teens get murdered. This then is incredibly parallel to the first part of information we are told. That the film is based on true case files. This creates a response of shock and upset from spectators.
