Title Research / Face Off

Face Off

The film 'Face Off' suggests that it is a thriller genre right from the first 30 seconds of the title sequence as the non-diegetic and diegetic music are contrasted with each other. The first 20 seconds spectators hear fair ground rides and laughing children, connoting a cheerful and fun atmosphere. However, we then are shown a medium long-shot of a man in a jet black suit, the music slightly crescendos to a minor scale, generating a clear change of mood and atmosphere through parallel sound.

How does this create interest or anticipation?

-This scene creates interest because enigma is created through the change in moods.
-We are shown a man who we assume is the antagonist played by Nicolas Cage, questioning why he is at a children's fair ground without a child.
-Anticipation is generated through the gun the antagonist reveals under a cloak. We question what he will use it for and why he is aiming it at a certain child.

-Colours of the titles are black and white, expressing a happy and dark side of the plot that will be discovered.

-The simple clear font that is used in this title sequence allows us to understand the message that is hidden in the title 'Face Off'.

-Face Off can be interpreted in different ways. I personally intake it as if something or people are going to go head to head in a fight or competition.

Film Title design:

-The background of the title sequence is overlapped on the film footage. This allows spectators to link and observe the message of the title to the footage from the film. In the title sequence there is no institutional information that is shown. This is maybe to engage spectators on the action as it could be an incredibly important part of the film.

Additional information about the Title sequence:

Actors:

-There are specific actors that are shown with their name being captioned. For example, the screen grabs above are captioned with John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. These two actors are mentioned before anyone else and before the title. These two actors are incredibly well known in the film industry. This will engaged spectators even more to watch the film.

Title and Music

-The title is parallel to the music that we hear during the title sequence. This is because the animation of the title when it is shown, is revealed very smoothly which is relates well to the atmosphere and emotions we feel during the title sequence.

-A sound bridge is used to form a smooth change from a major to minor scale. This helps spectators notice the typical thriller conventions that are used.

Relationship between moving image & titles:

-The relationship between moving image and the titles are shown together. We are first shown a medium long-shot of John Travolta, representing the importance of his role in 'Face Off'. I think the titles and footage are introduced in the order because the producers wanted spectators to be engaged on the characters and the action taking place.
